Our rented space did not have a room that could function solely as a playroom. I don’t know about you, but I find that having a safe space where I can trap children with lots of fun things to do so I can have some time to check off a few items on my to do list is a necessity. Can I get an AMEN?! Okay, so maybe it is more of a first world problem, but I know many of you mamas out there are feelin’ me. Anyway, shortly after we moved in, we discovered that our youngest (who never slept) slept better when his big brother was in the same room. And said big brother was completely unphased by the little one waking up, sometimes multiple times a night. This freed up our 3rd bedroom to become the dedicated playroom, Praise the Lord! Seriously, this is a GOOD gift from Him, is it not?
Since it was originally Greyson’s room, we had designed the room around his beloved “appy” sheets. Our sweet boy needed some stability when we moved in after experiencing the house fire and a room full of airplanes was just the ticket. We seriously noticed an improvement in his behavior shortly after he had this safe haven. Again, Praise God!
The first thing to go was the hot pink stripe in the center of the wall that surrounded the room. It just wasn’t gonna fly (see what I did there?!) We covered that with Behr Night Flight.
We found these adorable vintage airplane wall decals here. Greyson loved helping me put them on the wall! What I love about them is that they peel right off without damaging the paint and they can be reused, perfect for decorating a rented space!
I am obsessed with fabric storage bins for toy organization. There have been many times when I have said “why do I bother?” when it comes to toy organization. However, when he wants to help, Greyson is actually really good at remembering what goes in which bin. To the point that I can’t switch them up without major upset! Ha! I purchased these at both HomeGoods and Target, however Target has changed their production of these storage bins and the new style is not nearly as nice. And, if you’ve shopped at Home Goods, you know that their inventory varies from store to store. Here are some similar options I found:
I found this adorable car shaped storage bin at a Mom Sale for just a few bucks! Bet you can’t guess what Greyson stores in there! I’m assuming it has been out of production for quite some time, as I couldn’t find anything like it online. Below are some other options I found for car storage
We created the boys train/Lego table using two of the Ikea Trofast frames and a sheet of plywood. The goal was for Henley to not be able to reach the small Legos Greyson builds with, but that was extremely short lived. NaNa provided the Brio Train Set and the road tape.
We got a blue stool for each of the boys and a Car’s step stool for Henley. After he was able to reach over the edge of the table, he was too frustrated that he couldn’t see over the edge to play contently in the room. Greyson is an excellent safety officer for his little brother and always lets us know if Henley is doing something dangerous.
We were thrilled that Greyson’s teepee from NaNa survived the fire! This has been such a hit with the boys. They love to sit and read in there, talk through the window, or “hide” from each other. Greyson even loves to sleep in there on occasion! Amazon has so many adorable teepees for little ones. Check them out here!
Greyson had the chair version of this little blue couch prior to the fire. We thought it would be fun for the boys to share the couch version and let me tell you, it has been quite the hit! NaNa got the boys matching puppies, because who doesn’t need adorable matching puppies?! You can find them here and here.
The boys love this little CD player! Greyson quickly learned how to operate it himself! Henley especially loves music, so I am always looking for ways to incorporate it in their play.
A few safety elements we added were this gate and video monitor. With this room being on the second floor, I wanted to be able to leave the door open to have a more open concept. At the same time, I wanted the boys to be contained so that I didn’t have to worry about them getting into other not childproof rooms (i.e. trouble). I also wanted a way to intervene without having to run up the stairs every time it was necessary (I’d be one tired mama!) Greyson is especially good at following instructions we give through the camera and, though I may have to tell them to share more than once, my legs are thankful I don’t have to go upstairs to do it! Safety concerns about video monitoring systems have been circling the web for quite some time. What I love about this system is that it is a closed system and does not access your wifi at all! We love that we can keep an eye on our kids without worrying that someone else is too!
Thank you for checking out our playroom! What have you done to create a play area in your home?
